How to avoid pedestrian accidents in New York

Pedestrians are everywhere in New York. No matter where you turn, pedestrians can be seen. Walking is one of the easiest ways to get around the city, which is why the streets and sidewalks are flooded with people. When you combine this with heavy vehicle traffic in the city, you are likely to have pedestrian accidents. Here are some tips for avoiding such accidents.

Being a pedestrian in a large city is convenient, but it can also be incredibly dangerous. Pedestrians should cross only at crosswalks, specifically marked ones, in an effort to make themselves as visible as possible. Follow all the traffic signals and never cross against the light as it’s possible a car or truck could come barreling through the intersection.

Always walk on a sidewalk. If a sidewalk is not available, walk as close to the side of the road as possible and face traffic. This is not an ideal situation, but one that can help to save your life. By facing traffic you are making yourself more visible to oncoming traffic.

We know how hard it is to put your phone or tablet down these days, but you should do so when walking in the city. These devices are not just a distraction for drivers. Walking down the street while using a phone can distract you to the point where you walk right out into the street without looking.

If you must walk at night, wear reflective clothing. You should even consider using a flashlight when out at night to make it easier for drivers to see you on the corners of intersections.
